GOLF MAGAZINE PREMIER GOLF RESORTS LIST HONORS PELICAN HILL WITH ECO-FRIENDLY GREEN HALL OF FAME AWARD

NEWPORT BEACH, CA – February 20, 2012 – The Resort at Pelican Hill® has been selected as one of the newest Golf Magazine Eco-friendly Green Hall of Fame Award winners. As part of the 2012-2013 Premier Golf Resorts, the Green Resort Awards honors Pelican Hill among just three new “select few properties that lead the way in resource conservation and protection,” according to a story from the magazine’s website, Golf.com.

“As stewards of one of California’s most beautiful stretches of coastal land, we’re proud to be recognized among the nation’s leading green golf resorts,” said Steve Friedlander, Vice President – Golf for Pelican Hill Golf Club®. “In developing and later renovating Pelican Hill’s two coastal courses, we have gone to unprecedented lengths to design infrastructure and implement protocol that advance environmental stewardship, recycling and sustainability.”

Pelican Hill, encompassing 504 acres including 80 acres of protected habitat, features an environmentally friendly water management system. As part of the Resort’s development, two existing 18-hole ocean-view golf courses closed for two years, allowing renowned designer Tom Fazio to “re-perfect” his masterpieces, which originally opened in the early 1990s.

During Pelican Hill Golf Club’s renovation, its owner and operator, the Irvine Company Resort Properties, installed a water-management system to protect the area’s most important asset: the Pacific Ocean. Orange County Coastkeeper consulted during the planning process and said that Pelican Hill’s water-management system was the most advanced they had seen on the California coast, and would likely become a model for the state.

Conserving more than 50 million gallons of water per year, Pelican Hill’s sophisticated irrigation system and five underground rainwater runoff collection cisterns enable the use of only as much water as the Resort requires. A full-time water quality manager on staff monitors and maintains the system, which measures how much water the Resort’s vegetation needs and how much the soil can hold. In addition to conserving water, the system reduces the amount of debris and contaminants in the water, and captures and recycles runoff.

GOLF Magazine is proud of all of our 2012 Premier Resorts Awards Medal winners, but we’re particularly pleased to recognize those three properties that also earned a coveted Green Award, which recognizes extraordinary achievement in the field of environmental stewardship,” said GOLF Magazine Senior Editor Joe Passov, whose focus is travel and course rankings. “The Resort at Pelican Hill, in particular, strikes a chord, due to its inspired emphasis on water conservation and management, something of critical importance everywhere, especially in the western U.S. On-course weather stations, new fairway grasses and planters that act to filter storm water are among the highlights. Kudos, Pelican Hill!”

Along with its Green Resort Award, Pelican Hill earned a Silver Medal in Golf Magazine’s bi-annual Premier Golf Resorts list, which selects the nation’s top golf destination, based upon a reader survey that focuses on four criteria: golf, lodging, food & drink and service. The complete list is currently posted online at Golf.com and is featured in the March issue of Golf Magazine.

The Resort at Pelican Hill and Pelican Hill Golf Club, located along the coast of Newport Beach in Southern California, have earned numerous accolades, including the 2012 Grand Resort Award from Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, two courses ranked among the Golf Digest America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses, #1 U.S. Resort and #1 California Golf Resort in Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s 2011 Readers’ Choice Awards.
