GOLF MAGAZINE PREMIER GOLF RESORTS LIST HONORS PELICAN HILL WITH ECO-FRIENDLY GREEN HALL OF FAME AWARD

NEWPORT BEACH, CA – February 20, 2012 – The Resort at Pelican Hill® has been selected as one of the newest Golf Magazine Eco-friendly Green Hall of Fame Award winners. As part of the 2012-2013 Premier Golf Resorts, the Green Resort Awards honors Pelican Hill among just three new “select few properties that lead the way in resource conservation and protection,” according to a story from the magazine’s website, Golf.com.

Pelican Hill, encompassing 504 acres including 80 acres of protected habitat, features an environmentally friendly water management system. As part of the Resort’s development, two existing 18-hole ocean-view golf courses closed for two years, allowing renowned designer Tom Fazio to “re-perfect” his masterpieces, which originally opened in the early 1990s.

During Pelican Hill Golf Club’s renovation, its owner and operator, the Irvine Company Resort Properties, installed a water-management system to protect the area’s most important asset: the Pacific Ocean. Orange County Coastkeeper consulted during the planning process and said that Pelican Hill’s water-management system was the most advanced they had seen on the California coast, and would likely become a model for the state.

Conserving more than 50 million gallons of water per year, Pelican Hill’s sophisticated irrigation system and five underground rainwater runoff collection cisterns enable the use of only as much water as the Resort requires. A full-time water quality manager on staff monitors and maintains the system, which measures how much water the Resort’s vegetation needs and how much the soil can hold. In addition to conserving water, the system reduces the amount of debris and contaminants in the water, and captures and recycles runoff.
