A Bite of Balboa: Exploring the Island from Sunrise to Sunset

Balboa Island, nestled within Newport Beach, is an idyllic destination known for its quaint atmosphere, picturesque waterfront views, and vibrant community spirit. This man-made marvel has a fascinating history – originally a sandbar in Newport Bay, it was transformed through dredging and filling in the early 1900s to create the island as it exists today.

An intriguing facet of Balboa Island is its division into two distinct sections: “Big Balboa Island” and “Little Balboa Island.” Big Balboa Island is notable for its bustling Marine Avenue, the heart of town adorned with shops, restaurants, and boutiques, making it a hub of activity for both locals and visitors alike. Conversely, Little Balboa Island, situated on the eastern side, offers a more serene and residential atmosphere, characterized by endearing cottages and seaside properties lining its streets. All the streets on both islands, except for Marine, Park, and Balboa Avenues are named for precious stones, adding a beautiful note of whimsy to every visit.

From relaxing strolls along Marine Avenue to indulging in iconic frozen treats like Balboa Bars and frozen bananas, there’s something for everyone to experience and cherish on this charming island. Keep reading for a family-friendly curated itinerary from our Concierge team about how to enjoy the plethora of activities Balboa Island has to offer whether morning, afternoon, or night.

Morning Memories

First and foremost, there are two primary ways to reach Balboa Island: either by taking the Balboa Ferry, which accommodates both pedestrians and vehicles, or by car via Marine Avenue. The Balboa Island Ferry, operated by a family-run business, offers a unique and scenic approach to the island, which can be particularly appealing given the limited parking options available, not to mention younger family members will likely marvel at the short ride  (about 3-5 minutes) as it offers a sense of adventure and excitement.

After arriving, your family may wish to find the perfect spot to fuel up and start the day. If caffeine is a must, our Concierge team suggests Huskins coffee, conveniently located on Marine Avenue. This family-owned and operated coffee shop offers a variety of espresso-based beverages, drip coffee, cold brew, and specialty lattes. As the owners are originally from Canada, you might even opt to try your beverage with a splash of Canadian maple for a distinctive and bold twist. Other easy early on-the-go choices include Toastique, a boutique gourmet toast and juice bar offering a variety of toasts, acai bowls, juices, and smoothies, or perhaps Balboa Island Baking Co. for freshly baked goods such as muffins, scones, and croissants.

If you’re craving a heartier meal, look no further than  Wilma’s Patio, where you’ll find an extensive menu of home-style cooking in a casual setting. True to its name, Wilma’s Patio features outdoor seating where you can dine al fresco and enjoy your meal under the sunshine. This beloved establishment offers a diverse breakfast selection, ranging from classic egg dishes to indulgent pancakes and waffles. Don’t miss out on their signature “Belly Bomber” – a mini-boule hollowed out and stuffed with your choice of scrambled eggs, providing a satisfying and flavorful experience.

Once everyone is fed and content, embark on a leisurely stroll along the island’s perimeter, spanning about 2.5 miles in its entirety, and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay, charming waterside homes, and captivating landscapes. It’s an excellent opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Balboa Island while relishing the invigorating sea air. For families with older children, consider the alternative of renting kayaks or paddle boards. Both options provide the freedom to navigate at your own pace, allowing you to discover hidden coves, pause to admire the scenery, and explore areas inaccessible by other means.

Finish up the morning with a casual walk down Marine Avenue, popping in and out of shops like Balboa Candy, where you can get your fill of salt water taffy, Shirley’s Heart for decor and gifts, Magnolia Charlie for children’s clothing and accessories, or perhaps Olive Oil & Beyond to browse their selection of high quality extra virgin olive oils from around the world. And since you’re on Marine Ave, you might as well stop by Dad’s Donut Shop & Bakery for a legendary Balboa Bar or frozen banana once the heat begins to settle in for the day. These delectable treats, dipped in chocolate and adorned with various toppings, have been a favorite among locals and tourists alike for generations.

Afternoon Adventures

If you’re considering an afternoon excursion on Balboa Island, our Concierge team notes that renting a Duffy electric boat is one of the best ways to explore the serene waterways and unique landmarks. An hour on the water is the perfect amount of time to circle nearby Lido Island which is known for its beautiful homes and impressive architecture – marvel at the variety of styles as you pass by, from Mediterranean villas to modern waterfront estates. Be sure to also keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to spot marine life, including playful dolphins, curious sea lions, and various seabirds that call the area home.

When it’s time to dine, lunch options on Balboa Island include Snipe Island Crafthouse for freshly oven roasted pizza, signature burgers, and more; Crocker’s, another popular spot with a great selection of hamburgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches; or Wilma’s Patio which also has a wide-ranging lunch menu that caters to all ages. If you find yourself on the Peninsula side, a few ideas in Balboa Village include Great Mex Grill for flavorful Mexican, Pizza Pete’s or Cruisers Pizza for a yummy slice, or possibly the Harborside Restaurant for their award winning seafood (there’s also a thorough kid’s menu) where every table has a water view. Don’t forget to satisfy your sweet tooth with a scoop from nearby Cowafornia, offering premium hand-scooped ice cream in an array of irresistible flavors such as mocha almond fudge, huckleberry, banana walnut, horchata, cotton candy, and more.

After lunch, find a sun-warmed spot to put your toes in the sand. All beaches on the island are open to the public, so though they lack the grand expanse of the beaches of Newport Peninsula across the harbor, you are rewarded with softly lapping waves and great people-watching. The beach at Ruby Street is one of our favorites.

Evening Escapades

As the day’s heat begins to wane, snag a table at Basilic, a seasonal French-Swiss eatery, Royal Hen, a California gastropub, Ciao Balboa for authentic Italian, or The Village Inn, a cozy tavern with American bites and live music. Alternatively, pack a picnic dinner and head to one of the beautiful beaches on Balboa Peninsula to watch the sunset together as a family.

After your evening meal, indulge in a sweet treat and take a relaxed walk along the Balboa Pier. Here, you’ll be met with the soothing sound of waves breaking against the shore and the calming feel of the sea breeze. The twinkling lights emanating from nearby establishments, combined with the shimmering stars above, cast a magical ambiance that serves as the perfect conclusion to your day.
