Greens Rolling

‌Here at Pelican Hill, we roll our greens 3-4 days per week throughout the year.  Greens are rolled after the mowing process and also following aerification events to speed up the recovery period. There are many benefits to committing to this type of program and they are highlighted below:‌

1. Smoothness: Rolling helps to create a smoother putting surface by firming up the turf and reducing minor imperfections.  This smooth surface ensures a more consistent roll of the ball, allowing players to putt with greater accuracy.

2. Speed Control: Rolling can also help to increase the speed of the greens by compacting the surface and reducing friction between the ball and the grass. This allows course managers to achieve the desired level of green speed, which adds to the challenge and enjoyment of the game.

3. Thatch Reduction: Rolling can help to reduce thatch buildup on the putting greens. Thatch is a layer of dead grass and other organic matter that accumulates between the soil and the living grass blades.  Excessive thatch can impede water infiltration, air circulation, and nutrient uptake, leading to unhealthy turf.  Rolling helps to compress and break down thatch, promoting a healthier turf environment.

4. Disease Prevention: Rolling can help to prevent the spread of diseases by increasing air circulation and reducing moisture retention on the putting greens.  Diseases thrive in warm, moist environments, so maintaining a dry and well-ventilated turf surface through rolling can help to minimize disease outbreaks.

5. Aesthetics: Well-rolled greens contribute to the overall appearance of the golf course.  Smooth, uniformly green putting surfaces enhance the visual appeal of the course, providing a pristine playing environment for our members and resort guests.
