Parents and other role models in a child’s life can make restaurant experiences enjoyable for all with these suggestions…

Prepare your child for the outing.
Talk about what a fun time everyone will have, while setting expectations in advance. Remind your child that due to safety reasons, we never run in a restaurant between tables. We always keep our voices down, so we do not disturb other patrons. Bring activities to entertain your child, as you wait for the meal to be served.

Contact the restaurant in advance.
Advise the restaurant of any special requests for your family, such as table location, booster seat and food allergies your child may have.

Obtain the menu in advance.
Review the menu with your child at home to pre-select what they may and may not order.

Encourage your child’s participation.
If age-appropriate, allow your child to order his or her own meal and shine by practicing good manners and dining skills. Allow your child to express appreciation to the server and/ or the chef if the opportunity arises.

Praise your child.
Provide positive reinforcement constantly throughout the dining experience to help build your child’s confidence and ensure a repeat performance for future outings.

Being well-versed in wedding, social and fine dining etiquette not only allows couples t o present themselves well on their wedding day, it allows them to relax and enjoy every moment.

Gift Registry
I recommend keeping your gift registry simple by limiting it to just a few stores and selecting items in various price ranges to accommodate the various budgets of your guests. Additionally, while traditional etiquette states our family and wedding party members share verbally where couples are registered, our etiquette program addresses a modern way to slightly ‘bend’ this rule while still presenting yourself well.

Toasting
Wedding toasts may include the bride, groom, parents of the bride and groom, best man, maid or matron of honor and any others who host the celebration for the couple. Many couples and parents are surprised to learn we actually do not ‘drink’ to ourselves when toasted.

Cake Cutting
After the speeches, wedding meal, first dance and other planned reception activities, the cake cutting ceremony presents a lovely photo opportunity. During our Wedding Etiquette Soirée programs, I guide couples in detailed hands-on instruction, covering where and how to stand to ensure the best positioning for photos, gracefully holding the cake knife together and the importance of respectfully exchanging first bites.

We are all travel ambassadors representing our country and our own families.
Be respectful and caring to others. Make eye contact, extend greetings and express appreciation to all who help you. Children especially watch and learn how we treat others.

Be considerate to your fellow passengers.
Ask before you recline your seat. Close your tray table softly. Press gently on screens of in-seat monitors.

Be a good guest by respecting your surroundings.
Treat the guest room as your home. Don’t put your luggage on the bed duvet because it may be soiled from your airplane trip.

The season of socializing is upon us, so brush up on how to be a great guest.

RSVP and ASAP
Reply to invitations within two days of receipt. In today’s busy world, people often delay in responding. If your schedule is pending, simply let the host know that you are trying to finalize your plans and will advise as soon as possible.

Bring a gift of appreciation.
When visiting someone’s home, select a thoughtful gift with a personal note of appreciation. Opt for an orchid instead of cut flowers, so the host is not taken away from guests to find a vase. Your memories and the orchid will last long after you have gone.

Participate and be present as a guest.
When accepting an invitation to any event or holiday gathering, you have made an obligation to contribute to the gathering through your personality, wit and charm.

Be a gracious tablemate at mealtime.
If you or your child has a limited culinary palate, it’s polite try at least one bite. We never say, “I don’t like this” or “I don’t want this,” even if we don’t care for the food we are served.

Always express sincere gratitude to your host.
A prompt, handwritten note is the ideal response to a gift or any thoughtful gesture extended your way. Learning the four parts to writing a proper thank you note turns an unpleasant task into a fun and creative writing activity.
